Beauty in Vulnerability Artist Statement
When beauty pierces the heart, an arrow in your chest, do our hearts not ache with longing, with a desire to reach out and possess, be subsumed into this intangible breath? Yet while intangible, it is the most real thing we have ever felt — ever experienced. We are made for Beauty.
Within the idea of beauty that my art focuses on, comes the reality of true authenticity and love. When we try and hide this part of ourselves, try and hide from the Love that we were made for, it only leads to fragmented pieces of ourselves trying desperately to become a whole.
Layers upon layers of grasped identities. Melting; destroying; wearing our souls away bit by bit. Love turned to lust, peace is paralyzed, white is grey.
Things we turn to, hiding where we are meant to go, who we are meant to be.
Hiding who we are.
We cannot fully realize our own beauty if we do not realize that this beauty is a free gift, and that we are meant to be in union with its origin. The perfect Beauty. This Beauty is the One who was ultimately fragile and vulnerable, because love does not exist without making a gift of oneself. Try as we might, if we are not vulnerable with another in allowing ourselves to love and be loved, we are just pulling a sheet over our eyes — over our heart. When we let the curtain fall, the gaze, the focus on the heart, the core of who we are is, while intense, not overwhelming.
A symbol of love, a symbol of our core, our very being, is the heart. It is more than just an image that we associate with romance and flighty feelings, it is a raw, real expression of who we are.
The heart holds a power in its smallness. This heart is me. It is you. It is all of us when we stop striving, stop grasping at these walls that are so, so paper thin. Vulnerability is stronger, it leads us to ache for what we were made for. Love; the fullest expression of beauty.
